2004 Master Builders Award - Best Use of Timber

A decommissioned bridge in the Scenic Rim was re-purposed and became the design focus of the four bedroom home at Brooklands Drive. The octagonal form of the family living space is derived from the octagonal bridge girder that now sits in the centre of the space and supports the main roof structure.

  • Majority of the timber used in the house is recycled having been sourced from many different locations and settings including wharves and pubs
  • The main source of timber was from a local bridge that RAC bought, de-commissioned and removed from site. There is a large process involved in this (For more info see the 'Sustainable' section), from disassembling the bridge with minimal environmental impact, to transport and processing of the wood. All the timber had to be wire brushed and hand sanded prior to use in the house.
  • RAC looks for opportunities to re-use, re-cycle and adapt materials in every project and integrates this seamlessly with design
